Beauty is a Birthright

Jamie Reid is an artist and Shamanarchist, resident in Liverpool, who actively supports grass-roots community projects in the City.

Jamie’s work has deep, iconic associations with the punk rock era and more recently with bands including Pussy Riot and Afro-Celt Sound System.
Jamie employs natural forms and vivid colours in his work and lives by the ancient cycles of the seasons, as depicted his recent book ‘Eight-Fold Year’.
In 2016, Jamie’s retrospective at the Florrie, Liverpool, was entitled ‘Casting Seeds’ and involved distributing seed packets of wildflower seeds harvested on Merseyside. It attracted over 11,000 visitors.

Jamie Reid is passionate about unearthing shared histories and foraging for a deep sense of our collective and personal heritage.
Jamie painted and drew this image in the early 2000’s to challenge mainstream notions of beauty and heritage.
Jamie’s own Scottish and Universalist background has made him aware of the way in which nature and beauty can be appropriated and fenced off from working or ordinary folk. The image and message set out to challenge protectionist notions of “English Heritage”, by stating that beauty should be accessible to all rather than ensconced in inherited wealth.

Jamie defines beauty in this message as the natural beauty of wildflowers, for example, as vital forms of resistance and resilience, as opposed to beauty as a commodified product of market forces.
