Raising the Bar for the Northern Flowerhouse in 2018
The Wildflower sites created during the ‘Tale of Two Cities’ Grow Wild England Flagship have flowered to fantastic effect this year, Manchester Marathon runners, ran past them and thousands of passers-by have witnessed the dramatic displays up Princess Parkway and at City gateways like Chester Roundabout by the ‘This is Manchester’ sign. Key sites include Princess Parkway, Hulme Park, Subways by HOME and Alexandra Park.
Creative input from Venture Arts, Caroline Tattersall (The Clay Space), Hulme Community Garden Centre and Manchester Carnival have really fuelled imaginative thinking for further collaborations, perhaps in textiles and involving more pollinators.
Great credit to the Manchester Maintenance Teams and all involved, especially to Dave Barlow, Steph Lynch and all who made to Everton for our recent NWC event. They are to be congratulated on getting the maintainence so well done, it has been appreciated by lots of people, both Mancunians and visitors. (more news to come on this – as Rich and the Sheriff will give them certificates)
As Manchester is the Urban Pioneer for Defra’s 25 year plan, these bold statements really show another major element to Green infrastructure in Biodiversity and Colour, and provide important examples nationally and internationally. They demonstrate best practice for sustainable development goals and linking to the UN’s New Urban Agenda. We look forward to more partnerships with both National Wildflower Centre and in co-constructing our Northern Flowerhouse.
